Will Belly Button Rings Lead Your Daughter To More Body Piercing?

Belly button rings are increasing in popularity with young females. Not everyone likes this, especially not parents. Are navel piercings really that bad and will they encourage more of the same?

Getting your navel pierced to wear belly button rings is safer than it has ever been. Most tattoo studios offer body piercing of many kinds along with their amazing options for body artwork. These studios are usually state-regulated so that you can be assured the staff are professionals and the tools they use are sterile and safe. Even though most states prohibit body piercing or tattoos for those under 18, some will allow the procedure on those younger as long as the parent consents. However, there are a good number of reasons for a parent to hesitate in giving their permission.

A navel piercing is best done by a professional and requires diligent aftercare to avoid infection. If your teenager does not practice good hygiene in all areas of her life then she may not be ready for this step. The healing process for this one procedure can take up to a year, so she has to be patient and willing to wait before she dives into the variety of belly button rings available to her. And we all know patience is difficult when you are young.

As a parent, you may wonder if this first taste of body jewelry will encourage her to branch out to other areas. It is hard to say but it is something you should think about before you give your okay. How would you feel if your child pierced her eyebrow or nose or mouth? Will she stop at belly button rings?

There seems to be no end to places people will pierce and once your daughter is out on her own you can't control what she does. You may decide that letting her go through this one belly button rings procedure while she is still under your roof is a good idea. You can help her through the discomfort and healing process so she will make good choices later, on her own, about belly button rings and everything else.

Understand the Risks of Belly Button Rings

One of the most popular body jewelry options for young women are belly button rings. They grew to mainstream popularity in the 1990's when many Hollywood actresses and models started wearing them. At one point considered somewhat risque, they've become an accepted norm for the average girl. They complement a toned mid-section and look great with a bikini on the beach. For many wearers, they add a sense of beauty and confidence. Unlike many other piercings, they are adaptable and can be easily hidden from view whenever the wearer decides.

Belly button rings often take a few forms, depending upon the type of navel and the wearer's preference. Most commonly they take the form of a curved barbell or ring. If you have an "outtie", you may find it difficult to get a piercing. It is not like the traditional piercing, which is actually done in the skin surrounding the navel. Instead, the piercing actually goes through the navel causing it to pass through additional flesh and blood vessels. Some professionals refuse to do this, but every case could be different. If you find yourself in this position, you need to understand that you may face additional risks as well as a more painful procedure. The healing time may take longer and you could be more prone to infection.

In many states, people under the age of 18 are required by law to get the consent of their parents before being able to go through with the procedure. If you are underage, be sure to give your parents as much information as possible. They may not understand the popularity of belly button rings, but as long as you can convince them you are not harming yourself, they may not object. It's also important to choose a reputable, clean place to have the procedure done.

Belly Button Rings Cross The Age And Gender Lines

Belly button rings once drew piercings out into the common sight of the world. They are now crossing new lines. Those are the lines of age and gender.

When first brought into the mainstream in the 1990's, belly button rings were seen mainly on women in their early twenties to thirties. Occasionally you would see one on a teenager, but more likely than not she just looked young.

Today belly button rings are not only for the young women. With today's population getting in and staying in better shape longer, more and more older women are having the confidence to bare their tummies.

And they don't just want to bare their stomachs; they want people to notice them. This is where belly button rings come into play. After months of hard work getting a gorgeously toned stomach, most women want to set it off with the perfect jewel. And after all, they deserve the attention after all that pain and work.

Now let's not forget about the men. With lines blurring between what is a "male" thing and what is a "female" thing, it isn't surprising that belly button rings have crossed over.

While still not seen every day, it is becoming more common to see men with their navels pierced. And just like the piercings began with young women, it seems to be mainly young men who are jumping on this wagon.

Take a walk on the beach in the summer and I am sure you will see several young men flaunting belly button rings. While their rings may be subtler than the average woman's, they are no less attractive. Nor are they there for any other reason. Just like women want to flaunt their toned stomachs and show off their hard work, men want to do the same.

As the lines continue to blur, belly button rings have become the next in a long line of things that are now common for either sex. They are in good company with nail polish, and mascara.

Belly Button Rings Do Not Change Who A Person Really Is

Belly button rings only change someone's appearance, not who they are deep down inside.

Belly button rings show no signs of slowing down, in fact, they seem to be gaining momentum when it comes to popularity. That being said, more and more people are learning to accept these piercings (heck, even my Grandmother thinks they look neat). Are you one of the acceptors, or are you one who still frowns upon these pieces of body jewelry?

If you said you hate them with every fiber of your being, know this, what you think, regardless of who wants to admit it or not, has an impact. And this is a very, very bad impact. That's right; it can downright ruin a person's life.

Without a doubt, all teenagers are looking to be accepted by society, regardless if they want to admit that or not. And when they hear that someone thinks differently of them just because they enjoy sporting belly button rings, can really make them think differently of themselves. This can actually lead to acting out and depression. If you don't already know how detrimental depression can be, look it up. This is something that you need to know! To keep it short, without going into exact details, if a bout of depression is not caught and treated in time, it could lead to suicide in some cases. Now let me ask you this, is expressing your closed-minded views on belly button rings really worth risking someone's life over? I seriously doubt it.

Just because your niece or nephew has their navel pierced, doesn't mean that they are any different on the inside. The only thing that has changed is now they have a body piercing. Their personality is the same; and after all, isn't that how a person should be viewed, by their personality? So think twice about how you want to view him or her, because his will also affect how they see and what they think of you.

If after hearing all of this you still hate them, be considerate to those that don't and keep it to yourself. Otherwise, you never know who may be listening, and your thoughts could ruin someone's life.

Are Belly Button Rings Losing Popularity?

The question that often arises in the fashion world is if something is simply a trend, or is it to become a classic? This same question is posed by those interested in a belly piercing and wearing one of the many belly button rings that are in fashion right now. If you check the blogs and the social media outposts such as Facebook and Twitter you can find a lot of discussion about whether or not the belly ring is here to stay.

To answer this question it is probably best to take a step back and look at the roots of body piercing in general to see if it has been able to withstand the test of time. You can read about accounts in the Old Testament that indicate that some women had nose piercings. You can look at pictures coming out of the ancient ruins to see that there were piercings in the nose and the ears. And you can find evidence in Eastern cultures of various piercings related to religions and social status. Even in our Western culture ear piercings have become pretty mainstream.

Although some may still believe that belly button rings are nothing more than a temptation of the flesh; young women of all ages and across many cultural backgrounds are embracing the jewelry that they can wear in their navel. The perceptions of some will never be altered. However, many women choose their belly button rings as a sign of their femininity and confidence - not as a sign of their sexual habits.

Many fashions are designed which compliment the wearing of belly button rings. And, of course, the bikini is here to stay so summer is an ideal time to show off your body jewelry and your tan.

So are belly button rings losing some of their steam? Look in any fashion magazine or watch what the celebrities are doing and it would appear that this trend will continue. With so much body jewelry to choose from women will certainly continue to express themselves and their style with the use of body bling.

What Is the Next Big Thing for Belly Button Rings?

When a trend becomes more of a fashion staple, like belly button rings, there is often a parade of new ideas and new fashion styles that come to the market. Some of these ideas are embraced by large companies while others are born and bred in small towns across the nation. This smaller sector and their designs can often be found at local festivals. They gain popularity through word of mouth or social word of mouth on networks such as Facebook.

We asked a group of belly button rings enthusiasts what they would like to see in the future when they looked at body jewelry for their stomach. We were surprised and inspired by some of their ideas.

One of the most innovative suggestions was to make the belly rings out of recycled materials. Of course the part of the belly button rings which come in contact with skin would still require a type of flesh friendly material but the portion for the design could be the skies limit. Recycled glass was a popular suggestion.

One dancing diva suggested that miniature disco balls which included the ability to twirl and light up would be a fun set of belly button rings to have. The idea of adding a small battery and lights to various designs seems to be an idea that has a lot of enthusiasm.

One fashion conscious girl wanted all of her body jewelry to match. But she wasn't suggesting that they simply have a similar design. Instead, she wanted them to tell a story much in the same way that a charm bracelet tells a story. The earrings may be made of her birthstone; the belly button rings may be in the colors of her alma mater; the toe ring may be made of a material from where she met her true love...you get the idea. A journey of life through body jewelry.

If you were designing the next type of belly button rings what would you want to see? From the materials used to the themes expressed many artistic and fashionable people are experimenting with the next big thing.

Belly Button Rings Are Safer Than Ever

Belly button rings, like all piercings, have become safer to get now that they are more socially acceptable.

Belly button rings were once done at home by friends or in the back of shops by people who had no right to be piercing anyone. Many times this would lead to infection and scarring because it was either done improperly or the person getting the piercing was not instructed on the care it needed.

Today things have changed. Belly button rings are seen in almost every school and on almost every beach across the nation. With this upswing of piercing and the acceptance of society, it is now easier and safer to get pierced. Now you can easily find reputable piercers who will do the job for a fair price, and in a clean and sterile environment. Just like tattoos, everything needs to be fresh out of the package and handled appropriately.

As with any piercing, belly button rings need proper care for several weeks to ensure that it heals correctly and that infection doesn't set it. Most people assume that because it is done on the navel the chance of infection is slim. Well, they are wrong. Because the navel is most often covered by clothing, heat and moisture get trapped there and it can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

Whenever possible it is recommended that navel piercings be done in the warm months of the year. This lets the belly button rings have access to fresh air through thinner shirts or no shirt at all. The popularity and acceptance by society of belly button rings has actually helped lessen infection as well. Today, instead of hiding the piercing from their parents, most teens get them done legally with their parents' blessing. This means letting the piercing actually see the light of day and heal quickly and cleanly.

Being able to be honest with their parents, more and more teens are also being able to tell their parents when something has gone wrong with the piercing. This new wave of honesty has drastically reduced the amount of navel infections caused by piercings.

Are Belly Button Rings Still the Best Fashion Accessory for the Beach?

What is the best fashion accessory to wear with your bikini? Does it come from your growing collection of belly button rings or could there be a new player in town. Be sure that you are up to date on the best beach accessory this year.

Here comes the sun - and the season to bare it all on the beach with a sexy belly. This could just be the best season of all for those with a belly piercing as they look at all the belly button rings options to go with that new bikini. But hold on. Before you even hit those dressing rooms with all those scary mirrors and bad lighting, take a good look at that belly that you are going to flaunt at the beach. Is it in the best shape for belly button rings beach fashion?

No matter what type of bikini you choose, the best accessory (besides your belly button rings) is true confidence. Women's bodies come in all shapes, sizes and colors and men pretty much love them all! Knowing that is the first step to stepping out onto the sand in style.

However, what is really sexy is when that woman knows and loves her own body. When she is comfortable in her own skin then she can even pull off wearing a potato sack with style and confidence.

So where does that confidence come from? Well, that answer is different for each of us. But if for you it means getting your mid drift in top shape then you will be happy to know that you have time and the best tools at hands to make that happen.

You could do hundreds of crunches each day, and that could help build some of those underlying muscles. But more and more nutritional research is revealing that the shape of our belly is determined 80% by what we choose to eat.

Don't worry, you don't have to go on a belly rings diet in order to look your best in a bikini. In fact you should throw that four letter word "d-i-e-t" out of your vocabulary. Just learn about the best types of food to eat - the ones that work naturally with your body - and you will soon discover that you can eat great food, feel great from the inside out, and show off your belly button rings at the beach in style.

Important Considerations When Shopping For Belly Button Rings

You'd be hard-pressed to meet a person that doesn't care about their appearance in some way. The problem is, nearly everyone looks the same. For example, there are very few regional stores anymore. Instead, everyone shops at the same national chains, which can lead to a population that's wearing much of the same clothing. If you're looking for a way to stand apart from the crowd, you might consider getting a body piercing.

Belly button rings allow you to add a little bit of flair to your body, and that's definitely something that will set you apart from the people around you. One of the biggest problems that many people face when they decide to get a navel piercing is how to wear their everyday clothing. Due to the nature of the jewelry and where it is placed on the body, it is necessary that your stomach area is exposed when you are wearing a dangling piercing.

What do you do when you're not exposing your midriff? In this case, it's important to look for belly button rings that lay flat against your body. If you don't, there will probably be a recognizable lump underneath your shirt. Furthermore, wearing a piece that protrudes could cause you physical harm should the jewelry get caught on the fabric from your top.

When shopping for belly button rings, keep in mind that you'll likely need a few different styles in order to accommodate your needs from day to day. Dangling pieces, or those with charms, are great for nights when you're headed out on the town with a shorter shirt. For every day wear, look for flat belly button rings that won't protrude or get caught on your clothing. By keeping a fully stocked selection, you'll never be left to wear a piece that's inappropriate for your clothing.

Belly Button Rings: Perfect for the Newly Single Woman

Enduring a divorce is likely one of the most difficult things a woman can go through in her life. Many experts equate it to the death of a spouse, and the truth isn't that far off. Mostly, getting a divorce is a loss of dreams, hopes and plans for the future. When you suddenly find yourself single, every facet of your life changes, especially if you have children. Becoming the primary caregiver can be exhausting, especially if you are a stay at home mom.

Despite the difficulties, most women come to a point where they're ready to start moving forward with their lives. This could involve a great variety of activities and actions, the least of which is a little self-reflection. When it comes to increasing your self-esteem, you can have short-term goals and long-term goals. Some of your long-term goals might include buying a home, finding a new job or losing weight. However, it's a good idea to work on some short-term goals as well. They can be motivating and give you something to get excited about while you work toward the future. Some examples might include getting a haircut, buying some new clothes or even getting a piercing or a tattoo.

You might have to be more of the adventurous type to actually consider getting a piercing, but a surprising number of single women do opt for belly button rings or tongue piercings. Tattoos are always a good option, but are quite a bit more permanent than say, belly button rings, so that's a consideration that you'll have to tackle on your own.

The best advice for newly separated or divorced women is to go outside of your norm. If you continue to do the same things, look the same way and fail to realize your goals, you're not going to find happiness. While considering belly button rings might sound like a silly suggestion, it's something easy that provides instant gratification. Plus, you can always change your mind without any lasting recourse.

Health Tips for Using Belly Button Rings for Pregnant Women

The use of belly button rings for pregnant women is becoming a fashion lately. Many women refuse to get rid of their belly button rings even during their pregnancy. These pieces of jewelries serve as decorative accessories making the navel area look impressive. However, when this is practiced during pregnancy, several cautions and proper maintenance should be carefully observed. Here are some ways on how to properly deal with your rings during prenatal stage; whether you choose to keep it affixed on your belly, remove it, or pick another style.

Most health professionals recommend the removal of belly button jewelry or ring during pregnancy. Based from the reports of some women wherein their rings itch and pull as the belly stretches on the fifth or sixth month. You will be at risk of infection if the ring causes your skin abrasions. The best thing to do in this case is to remove it. On the event that the hole closes, just have your belly re-pierce when you're ready after giving birth. Considering this scenario would help you take the necessary actions to keep you in good condition while pregnant.

Another option to bear in mind is to use non-metal jewelry. If you want to keep a ring hanging on your belly this type would be suited for pregnant women. It is flexible and is two inches in length which is adaptable to your growing abdomen. Expectant mothers acknowledge that this item enables their bellies pierced without pain unlike other piercing. Preferring to put this on would be the best alternative to stay trendy even pregnant.

Once you have decided to keep your ring in place, be vigilant on the possible discomforts that it might bring. Take notice on the skin surrounding the ring if it turns red or there is pus that's developing. If it itch and makes you feel uneasy better just remove it. If the infections persist consult your physician for treatment.

Upholding to the use of belly button rings for pregnant women is a matter of choice. Seek advice from a piercing artist for the best product suited to your condition. Ask your doctor for guidelines having that belly button ring on when you give birth. You can also buy a non-piercing type which you only need to clip on. Belly Button Rings Match Every Outfit

Belly button rings are now available to coordinate with every look. From simple to plain, there is a ring available for your outfit.

Belly button rings were originally simple barbells. Most often, they were made from simple stainless steel and were available in several sizes. However, with the new views on piercings, the available styles have skyrocketed. Today, piercings of all types are seen on people of all ages. As it becomes more common to see navel piercings, the jewelry used to adorn said piercings is becoming increasingly intricate and detailed.

Today's belly button rings are as varied as snowflakes. There are thousands of designs to choose from. Whether you prefer to stick with the classic stainless steel barbell or are more adventurous and decide to pick a ring and chain combination, you can find what you want on today's market. Available in styles from bejeweled barbells to spirals and rings, if you can imagine it, you can find it.

With navel piercings having become mainstream, the jewelry companies are waking up and realizing the potential that comes with this new market. While you can still purchase simple stainless steel barbells, you can also find quality rings at the jewelry store. Belly button rings are not just geared towards teens on a budget now. With people of all ages and classes getting their navels pierced, the quality available is increasing faster than you would believe.

Ten years ago, your primary options were stainless barbells, simple hoops, and hoops with a tacky gum-paste gem affixed to them. Today you can purchase stainless steel, titanium, yellow gold, white gold and get them with actual gemstones. Aside from the quality of specific rings increasing, the overall quality in that field has increased.

When you purchase belly button rings today, you know what you are getting. The navel jewelry available today is of a much higher standard than that of ten years ago. No matter what your price point is, you can find the ring that suits your style and is of quality construction.

My Problem With Belly Button Rings

While I'm likely in the minority, some of you can probably relate. I'm a grown woman with children, yet my own mother has "gotten her groove back;" otherwise known as a mid-life crisis. This past year she's sold her sedate 4-door car for a sporty model. She's let her hair grow longer and raiding my closet during visits ostensibly to see the grandkids! Most horrifying of all - she's made subtle inquiries about belly button rings!

As children, we grow up making assumptions about our parents. We probably put them in neat little boxes with labels because they were always there, being our Cheerleader or Teacher, Chauffeur or Maid. Our parents were not seen as unique individuals with their own dreams and interests, or we discounted them in favor of our own interests. We didn't act out of meanness, we just didn't think of them as social animals.

Now my mom is in her late 50's and seems to have found her second wind. I'm proud that she's enjoying life and taking time for herself. But I'm just not sure I can handle the thought of her wearing belly button rings. My father may be gone, but she's still my mother and should act like it.

Not wanting to squelch her spirit, I decided to have a talk with her to find out why belly button rings were on her radar. In turns out her motivation is more toward showing off her diet and exercise accomplishments than any sort of statement. For the first time in her adult life, she felt comfortable in her own skin; she felt attractive and desirable. She thought belly button rings might be a way to demonstrate the freedom she was now feeling.

Thankfully, we arrived at a comfortable compromise. She's going to get highlights in her hair instead!

Do Babies And Belly Button Rings Mix?

When it comes to belly button rings, like it or not, you are going to have some issues both before and after your pregnancy. Yes it's possible but is it good?

Browse the internet regarding pregnancy and navel piercings and you will find plenty of both positive and negative comments including things like:

* I had no problems. I put a pregnancy post in and made it through just fine.

* I took my belly button ring out during pregnancy. The piercing closed up and I had to have it redone.

* I have a mess on my hands. Stretch marks, scars and now I need plastic surgery to fix everything.

Everyone has a different experience but you have to consider that sometimes it's not just getting through the pregnancy, there is an afterwards to deal with also. It can't hurt to ask yourself these questions before you sign up for a navel piercing:

1. Do I plan or hope to have more than one child? It could be more difficult to keep that belly button ring intact through multiple pregnancies.

2. Do I plan to nurse my babies? If yes, consider that you're going to be holding that child front and center for many months. Babies have a way of pulling on things and finding things you don't want them to.

3. Am I going to have time and energy to take care of my navel post-baby? You are going to have your hands full of diapers and milk and slobber and sometimes a shower is the only thing you will get accomplished in a day. Do you really want one more thing to worry about?

4. Am I okay with the fact that my belly may not look the same after baby!? You may never want to show off your body in that way again. But then again wanting to show off your belly button ring may be just the incentive you need to get back in shape.

Think about it. Babies and belly button rings may not mix by nature but only you can answer the question if that is okay with you.

An organization fanatic, Julie loves finding creative ways to set her home (and yours!) to rights with practical products and efficient problem-solving. Tackle your closet with closet organizers and visit Space Savers for other great products sure to help with your clutter problem.

Belly Button Rings Compliment A Great Summer Body

With summer approaching, now is the best time to get your belly button piercing. It's best to get your piercing healed up before you head outside in the sun.

With summer right around the corner, the hottest trends to help you sizzle include belly button rings. Whether you are beach bound or just enjoy showing off your midriff, they can be an excellent complement to a great body. You worked hard to look good, so it might be time to get that piercing you've been hoping for. You may not be aware of it, but it's actually a really good idea to get your piercing done well before summer hits. You need give it plenty of time to heal before you expose it to ocean or pool water. Bacteria can get in and create a harmful infection. If you do wait until summer to get the piercing, you may want to sit out for the first few weeks while you wait for things to heal.

Another thing you have to be aware of with belly button rings is how easy they can be to snag on clothing. You should avoid purchasing dangling jewelry as it has the greatest potential to snag when you least expect it. You should start out with a simple stud and work your way up to other belly button rings as your piercing heals and you begin to feel more comfortable. You should also avoid wearing tight clothing while things are still healing. This can also make you sweat, which will irritate your healing wound and could lead to infection.

Signs of an infection include redness, swelling and puss drainage. Sometimes these symptoms can also indicate your body rejecting the piercing. If you experience these symptoms and they appear to be worsening, don't hesitate to contact your doctor. They can usually help you get things cleared up within a few days. If things are getting particularly painful or bad looking, you may need to consider taking out the piercing until you get medical attention.

Fashion Leads the Way for More Belly Button Rings

Clothing fashions will continue to drive the demand for belly button rings. As women have burned their bras and bared their bellies, they can now enjoy the type of body jewelry that will enhance the exposed areas of their skin. No longer confined to belly dancers or travelling gypsies, belly button rings have come into the mainstream partially because of popular clothing designs that truly enhance a woman's body.

Just consider the changing fashion trends throughout the ages. Imagine trying to wear rings on your belly underneath a tight fitting corset and hoop skirt ensemble, popular in the Victorian era. As the clothes became a little looser, and much more comfortable, the door began to open up to various types of body jewelry. However, in many cases the exposure of a woman's skin was still frowned upon.

With the 1920's we had the emergence of Flappers and a little more flair in the clothing choices for women. In the 50's we had many conservative styles - think "Leave it to Beaver". And then came the 1960's, free love, Woodstock, and a celebration of the body.

The fashion industry has been a companion to every era and every style trend. Sometimes leading the trend, and sometimes accommodating the new spirit in an expression of what it means to be a woman. In today's terms that new spirit includes a bold expression and celebration of women in the 21st century. Our opportunities are abundant and our ability to express who we are through body art, body jewelry and belly button rings is readily accepted by a larger group of the general population.

Fashion trends happily expose the woman's midriff which accommodates the desire for belly button rings which complement what women wear. From classy, to trashy, to silly, to just plain fun, fashion body jewelry is a natural partner to fashion, flair, and individuality.

Do Belly Button Rings Really Change A Person?

Belly button rings only change what a person looks like, and not even by that much. They do not change who a person is deep down.

Belly button rings, in reality, don't change a person's appearance all that much. It is only a minor change in one little location, and being in a navel means that you do not have to look at it. So if you think that if your son or daughter has it done, this is something that will stare you in the face day after day, and that absolutely everyone and their brother will see, think again. For inappropriate occasions, such as funerals or sometimes school, it can easily be covered up. Actually, it can be covered up every day awhile he or she is lounging around the house so that you don't have to see it. But then why get it, right? Because it will make him or her feel better about themselves.

When kids sport belly button rings, they are trying to say something about who they are as a person. And at this tender, self-exploratory age, that means the world to them. Think back how ever many years, back to when you were a teenager. Now think how vital this horrid age is. Think about who you are or were, and then think about how your view may have been changed by one rather dumb comment about the style you were into back then. Admit it or not, that hurt you somewhere, and if it didn't hurt, it ticked you off something fierce. Am I right? And when a teen gets mad, they rebel. That rebellion is usually what leads to doing dangerous things. And I doubt that is something you want your child to go through.

Now that you have taken a second to think about all of this, don't you think that it's better to be supportive of them? Belly button rings are quickly becoming one of the safest piercings to get, aside from getting your ears pierced that is, so that isn't something that should make or break your decision. Just take it from me, be supportive and, if it makes you feel better, let your teen know how you feel, but assure them that you are supportive of their needs and wants. This will make a world of a difference for your teen.
